We watched videos of Wendi Deng giving interviews. She has been busily promoting her new movie Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which as we go to press is still being edited. It is a movie she says about two Chinese women who become friends; then one betrays the other, but in the end, they reunite and there is forgiveness. It is a very ordinary movie made by a very extraordinary woman...
In the interview which I watched on the Internet, Wendi Deng speaks Chinese English in a coarse, rough voice.
She makes no effort to hide her Chinese accent and she appears passionate about her latest venture. She talks about friendship and speaks a lot on the subject but there is little warmth and I can hear the tension in her voice, and see it in her body. But there is no nervousness. Wendi Deng is supremely confident of herself and her power.
Having studied her chart, alongside that of her husband, and watching her speak, I am awed by this lady. She smiles easily enough but there is also a wariness in her eyes. I expect that in her ten years living in the United States metamorphosing into a powerful society lady, always on the arm of the powerful Rupert, she is rightly on her guard always. Yet the power of her position does seem to sit easy on her and definitely there is more character, more passion and more determination within her than in all Rupert's other children combined. They will be no match for her.
So I expect her to take over the reins at News Corp when her husband Rupert Murdoch dies - as he will within the next two or three years. She has two children with him Grace and Chloe - and they are definitely being groomed to take their rightful places as Murdoch heirs eventually. But while they grow, there is no doubt Wendi Deng will emerge as the real power in the Murdoch clan.
