Easy Feng Shui For The Home

Materials Matter

When we think about our Home Value, we always refer to its location and floor area. But what we don't think about is its Psychic Value, the value of how much we cherish our homes and the value we place on a property when we resell it.

But how do we gauge this 'premium' for a home, as no two people will ever cherish the same space the same? It is helpful then to set some ground rules on how to determine this psychic value. Remember, there are plenty of properties in the same location with similar floor areas, but with different price tags. Our aim is to create an environment that enhances both psychic and monetary value of the space.

Easy Feng Shui For The Home

Materials to Create Value

First, we have to determine what sets your home apart from the rest. When we talk about materials, the choice, size and design of each material would affect the perception of how much we pay for the space. For example, a living room with 1ft and 2ft size ceramic tiles would give a different perception of the space. Larger-sized tiles tend to be associated with a higher perceived value, while 1ft-sized tiles are typically a lower-grade option. While the price difference between the two selections is minimal the change of tile size creates a higher psychic value for the home.

The next item to consider is the pattern on the ceramic tiles. With today's technology, ceramic can feature an array of patterns and finish, ranging from terracotta to timber to marble effect tiles. For main living spaces, the use of a marble effect tile creates a sense of a higher quality finish compared to a monotone ceramic tile finish. Similarly, the tiling pattern also affects our perception of the space, e.g. in bathrooms, a staggered tiling layout breaks up the monotony of the space.

Bathrooms Count

Believe it or not, bathrooms tend to form a major decision in the valuation of the home. For most willing buyers, the less work required on the bathroom, the quicker the time it would take to move in. So a minimal investment to enhance the bathrooms could lead to further returns at the end of the day.

Second, the choice of the material texture will also affect the comfort level of the space. For example, when comparing a natural timber floor to a laminate flooring system, visually we may not notice the difference, but the tactile nature of both elements reminds us of the difference of a higher or lower grade material choice. Similarly with carpets, the difference between wool and nylon and the difference in weight and padding thickness all affects our perception of the comfort level.

It is this vital comfort level that affects how we appreciate a space, which then translates to how much people are willing to pay for such spaces. So when we think about how materials can affect the value of a house, consider how simple material selections can have a huge impact in the overall perception and value of the home.

Clumsy Transitions

In this example above, the contrast of the two material choices is overwhelming as there is no seamless transition between the two areas, which then creates a conflict between the two spaces. So while both materials may be of high quality, the use is counterproductive in this case. In such a scenario, the use of a softer tone element such as carpets or neutral white oak timber flooring would have worked better in creating a flow between the two areas, rather than a conflict as in this case. By creating this invisible barrier, the use of the materials here has instead shrunk the perception of the space as well as its value.

Contrast Creates Harmony

In this example above, the use of ceramic tiles is balanced through the introduction of a central carpet cover. The rug helps to break the monotony of the room and also gives the space a sense of arrangement. While simple in concept, the arrangement and color selection of the furniture helps to add a higher perceived value in the mind.

Materials to Create Moods

The next design consideration is to look at how materials can affect our mood. First we need to understand that everything surrounding us has an effect on our perception of the space. So when we look at hard materials such as ceramic tiles or natural stone, there is an automatic association to a more "public" space.

Similarly, carpets and timber tones tend to create a more "homely" effect, but what is interesting is that too much of one kind of material creates monotony, and thus gives off too much hard, yang energy.

The secret is to balance these materials out by introducing a compatible material, or through the use of furniture and colors. The first thing space exhibits a very monotone effect where the timber flooring has created hardness with no sense of comfort. The second illustrates how too many accents of the same material has its own drawbacks; the timber strips and ceiling patterns generate too much confusion as there is too much information for the mind to accept. In both cases, the inner appreciation for the space turns negative, which then translates into an erratic and confused state of mind.

Color Selection Can Make or Break a Space

The key elements of the design form associations throughout the space without one element or material dominating over another. The carpet in the middle of the room helps to center the orientation of the furniture, but what is fundamental is the color selection. By introducing a neutral tone, the color does not create any confrontation with the two dominating colors, which are mainly rely white and black. The neutral beige tone is further highlighted due to the contrast of the colors.

The furniture selection also brings balance to the room. The white sofa set is complimented by the flooring and drapes, while the black furniture pieces accent the black wallpapered feature wall. Here we can see how giving simple consideration to the colors and how they go together can create such a marked difference to balance and appeal.

So when we look at materials, consider how a mix of different colors can create the most appealing or the most appalling of spaces in the home. The next time you select materials for the home, always give thought to size, material anti patterns, and how these would enhance the value and comfort level of the space. Above all, once you have selected the materials, consider how you can enhance your space even further to create the right mood, as a happy home really does create a happy life, better rental income and better asset appreciation. Feng Shui Karma

These past couple of months, I am happy to say that I have had some very good fortune indeed. Sounds like a breath of fresh air to you? Yes, it is definitely a change to report good news when all round us the world seems to be falling apart, with economic woes, fierce typhoons, earthquakes, forest fires and political unrest in so many countries! How lucky we are to be living a relatively peaceful disaster free life here in Malaysia!

Don't read me wrong, I did not strike the lottery. Nor did I become a billionaire overnight! Good fortune does not necessarily mean getting money. Get real! Things like that only happen in fantasy; not in real life!

Feng Shui Karma

MINOR OBSTACLES PRECEDED MY GOOD LUCK

What really happened was that in the past two months, I met with many minor obstacles and setbacks, but my feng shui training taught me to stay positive, confident and calm. We know that in a "bad year" it is better to have a series of small setbacks, which then purify the bad luck, rather than have ONE big thing go badly wrong!

So with a clear mind, I set out to clear the hurdles like removing splinters from my skin - one by one. I used methods and remedies that I learn in this feng shui blog. I am ecstatic to say that it turned out really well, as I had combined feng shui remedies with invoking the help of the cosmic forces - how powerful is that?!

Here, I would like to share how I did it. The good results even brought me two unexpected bonuses! First I stayed Positive. One's attitude, confidence and faith in oneself makes for a powerful first step to success. It establishes strong positive affirmations in the mind that create the mindset to overcome challenges. Visualization plays a very important role. When the mind is negative, nothing in the world can help you!

At the same time, although feng shui is non-religious, it becomes extra powerful when one uses the third dimension of spiriuality by invoking the help of the cosmic forces. This works irrespective of which religion you practice. I practice Tibetan Buddhism and it was to this philosophy that I turned to for help.

FIRST GOOD THING

In early August, my family flew in from different partial the world to reunite on a small private island in the state of Terengganu for a short break. Before we left home. I happened to mention that I was looking forward to our fishing holiday. When heard of it, I was immediately told that I would be inadvertently creating massive negative karma from the seemingly innocent sport of fishing! I would be causing my family the same fate! Buddhists believe that one would generate a lot of negative karma if one were to kill for fun. I was persuaded to reconsider.

I am very grateful that she took the trouble to prevent me and my family from accumulating negative karma, as heeding her advice, we proceeded on a diving, snorkeling and canoeing holiday minus the fishing - even my brother who has been a die-hard sport fisherman all his life left all his gear behind.

RETIRING MY CAR

Coming hack to my annnoying obstacles. Well, two months ago, my husband and I were forced to consider changing our family car: seven years and a minor accident had taken a toll on its performance. At that age, our faithful workhorse was beginning to wheeze and cough. We embarked on the process of choosing and buying a new car, and thus began a long and tedious process... just to acquire a new car! You wouldn't believe the problems and delays that cropped up. They ranged from slow and difficult finance loans, to inspections and transfers, and even faulty accessories installation! Everything possible and everything unimaginable came up one after another, as though to victimise and sabotage our plans, and we needed the new larger car for the journey to our holiday!

WHAT I DID ...

1. I re-checked the feng shui of my home and ensured that all my feng shui cures were in the correct locations. I added much needed victory enhancers and changed the water features. I hung six small bird figurines along the edge of the ceiling of my balcony and also a single big bird at my bedroom window so that they will bring me good news! I polished the gold Pi Yao pendant that I wear to re-activate it, as the Horse is in side conflict with the Duke of Jupiter in 2012.

2. I cleansed the many Wu Luos that I display in the South of all the major rooms in my home. My animal sign is also afflicted with the Illness Star this year, and not many know that the Wu Luos second job besides keeping illnesses and accidents at bay is also for wealth generation and for removal of obstacles. Revitalization of and placement of additional feng shui symbols ate very important steps to carry out when everything seems to be going awry.

3. Every night for two weeks I offered incense to the local spirit landlords (who are landlords of the space you occupy) so they would be appeased and not set up blocks to my projects. I bought a new incense holder and offered the fragrance of pure sandalwood and Kemenyen, which is a type of incense that is popular with the Middle Eastern countries. I recited a special purification mantra 21 times followed by an offering invocation, taught to me in one of the new ebooks.

Rain or shine (Moonshine that is), I burned the incense and practiced the rituals on the balcony of my condominium nightly (best done outdoors). It takes ten minutes each time. According to the Sutra that contains advice on incense, the benefits of burning aromatic herbs and roots this way are incredible! I left the incense to burn into the night. Incense offering rituals can be performed this way daily to avert illnesses and obstacles. By the way, it is very good to do this type of offerings before you consult any oracle or divination,

4. I consulted the 21 Tara Oracle book a.k.a, the Tara Mo Divination. All instructions on how to use the book are contained in the first few pages and they are easy to follow. I followed instructions to ensure that my practice of the Tara Mo was done correctly. I offered great respect to the book slipping it into a bright red book binder which had the goddess Tara embossed on the front cover and this brought me accurate and auspicious answers.

This book binder has a built-in pocket on the inside cover to store the pouch of crystal beads (you need the beads to consult the oracle). Tara's Mo uses 21 white crystal beads and 1 black bead to determine which of the 21 Tara Emanantions answers your question.

I asked Tara if I could overcome all the challenges that I had and I asked if I would succeed in acquiring a new car on time. All answers were positive and auspicious! Yessss!!! At first, I didn't quite believe the results, so I repeated the whole process of consultation a second and a third time and got exactly the same answers each time! Wow! And all the answers came true!

A day later, I 'discovered' the Tse.do Mantra on the last few pages of a book of mantras. I had often chanted mantras from this book but had never noticed this mantra before. The Tse.do Mantra is an especially powerful mantra for people suffering from cancer. It is also incredibly beneficial for people with business difficulties; for the unemployed; for those whose relationships are not going well and for success of specific activities or projects.

The Tse.do is for writing, for copying. It is especially powerful to write this mantra as many times as you can. Writing just one copy is like copying all the 84,000 teachings of Buddha - that's how powerful it is! Mountains of negative karma get purified - this is how great the purification is!

I immediately started copying the mantra into a new note book with a beautiful cover and I am still doing it daily. I passed it on to many friends and acquaintances who had problems of their own or who had problems of their own or who were unfortunate enough to be suffering from the Big 'C'.

The result of all that I have related brought me my lovely new car just in the nick of time. I also successfully sold off my old horse for a very fair price! *Grin* best of all, it brought me TWO BIG bonuses that I didn't even ask for ... didn't even think of! Lassie Langkawi

Picture this - a vermillion sunset in the horizon with the silhouette of a flock of birds flying into the amber glow. A water fowl and its feathered friends are getting ready for the night wading through the wetland lagoon that is festooned with aquatic plants. Their evening birdsongs echo through the marshes. With a chilled lime and soda in hand, I savour this idyllic scene while a ginger cat with a crippled paw wraps itself round my legs purring and meowing softly to say hello to me. A black cat saunters up to join us and the three of us, woman and beasts, stand on the verandah of a restored antique Malay house at the edge of the wetland admiring the fading sunset.

Lassie Langkawi

As a feline lover, this is pure bliss - a stunning sunset vista shared with two furry friends. The tropical sky slowly turns into inky darkness punctuated with twinkling stars while the moonlight cast an eerie glow on the lagoon. My feline companions take their leave to go on their nightly adventure as cats do. Here in this piece of paradise, animals are loved and free to roam without any fear of danger knowing they are safe. This is the home of The Langkawi Animal Shelter and Sanctuary Foundation (LASSie).

ANIMAL SANCTUARY

I am at the resort of Bon Ton in Langkawi island where clients are treated as house guests and informality and friendliness are the order of the day. It is like no other resorts I have ever visited and I make a pilgrimage to this amazing sanctuary year after year to see my furry friends. It is also an excuse to feast on the slurpingly scrumptious Nonya Laksa and the sinfully delicious dessert at their restaurant, Nam, the best eatery on the island.

Unlike conventional hotels, here guests are accommodated in individual antique Malay houses equipped with modern facilities and beautifully decorated in Asian heritage chic. It is a resort with a mission statement to preserve and showcase ASEAN traditional style (Southeast Asian countries in the region), while at the same time to give shelter to stray and neglected cats and dogs. This is the crusade of one woman whose compassion for animals is what Mother Teresa was for the poor in Kolkata in India.

Narelle McMurtrie, an Australian who has made Malaysia her home for over thirty years, came to Langkawi in 1994 to open Bon Ton restaurant and resort having sold her business in Kuala Lumpur. She brought along a few street dogs that she had rescued in the city. She round the problem on the island was the numerous number of stray cats roaming the streets and markets. She decided to set up first veterinary clinic on the island on a charity basis to spay and neuter the cats and releasing them back to their original habitat in an attempt to control the population. Soon, more and more cats and dogs were rescued brought to the resort, some are badly abused or injured.

NO-KILL POLICY

As an animal lover, Narelle sees the potential of this safe haven as an ideal place for an animal shelter. Waifs and strays are brought in - the lame, the one-eyed, the sick, the injured, the three-legged or one-eared moggies and mutts - no animal would be turned away. The sanctuary has a 'no-kill' policy. Six years ago, the project had grown so big that LASSie was set up with the main aim of controlling the stray cat and dog population by sterilization.

Guests are often amused to meet the three wonder dogs of the resort- Buffy, Pipi and Berjaya who look like extras in Ben Hur with their 'chariot wheels' attached to their pelvic area to help with their mobility. Like all the other animals in the resort, they have a traumatic history. They were left to die on the road after being hit by cars and are paralyzed for life. Narelle fitted two-wheel contraptions on their pelvic areas which act as wheelchairs to help them move about. They are quite a sight to behold when they wheel themselves around greeting the guests.

Over a hundred cats are housed in a spacious fenced up area by the clinic at the top of the road leading to the resort. It is comfortable and they are well fed and very well looked after. Cats ate normally territorial and do not tolerate other cats, but here they all live harmoniously, secure in the knowledge that there will always be food for everyone and most of all, they can feel the love given to them. A selected few are let out and become resident cats to keep guests company. They are a delight to be with, so gentle and affectionate. About 135 dogs are housed in a well-designed shelter by a rice field ten minutes' drive from Bon Ton. Shane, Mocha and Milo are three lovely ambassador dogs in residence to meet and greet guests with their wagging tails.

HERITAGE & HISTORY

While others see antique Malay or Chinese houses as dilapidated structures to be demolished to make way for modern concrete breeze blocks, Narelle sees heritage and history in every wall and beam of the houses. She rescued these houses in Langkawi and the mainland and hired skilled local carpenters to re-assemble them piece by piece and transformed them into stylish accommodations in this boutique resort in an old coconut plantation, nestled by a wetland.

The resort is located on the west of the island sheltered by the mountain ranges of Gunung Machincang and Gunung Raya which hold the energy of the area. The commodious compound dotted with eight beautifully restored village or 'kampung' houses for guests, are infused vitalising yang energy as gentle breeze from the sea waft through the resort. It is constructed in harmony with the landscape resulting in a very laid-back and relaxing ambiance, ideal for frazzled city folks to recharge their battery.

A wooden deck overlooking the wet!and by the pool and Jacuzzi is the perfect spot for observing the feathered denizens of the lagoon and enjoying the sunset while shipping cocktails which the bartender excels at mixing. Friendly resident cats would join in and laze about on the deck to keep you company. My kind of heaven! Animals are purveyors of positive chi and it brings life and vitality to the place.

LASSie is funded by Bon Ton and its sister resort Temple Tree and through donations from the public. Volunteers help to clean the kennels and cat shelter and walk the dogs. This is an ideal place for graduate vets to volunteer their service at the clinic. With the ever growing number of abused and neglected animals on the island, LASSie needs support. The public can adopt, sponsor the animals or volunteer their service and donate money online. Staying at Bon Ton and Temple Tree as paying guests and patronize their restaurants would be appreciated as all proceeds help to care for the animals.

As I cuddle a fluffy white cat in my arms, its purr music to my ears, I remember the words of the Dalai Lama, "Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so does the creature." And surely showing compassion to animals will add an extra mileage on your good karma meter. Number 9 In Feng Shui

The Master Number 9 is an important number signifying wholeness and completion exactly as being taught, and while reading the recent feng shui ebook, I also discovered that all the angles and "degrees" of the compass, the flight of the "stars" in the Lo Shu chart with 5 in the centre that is the basis of all flying star charts expressed as numbers in the three by three grid... all added up to 9!

Not surprising as 9 is the highest digit before we go back to 1.

Number 9 In Feng Shui

The Lo Shu square in Feng Shui has nine numbers placed in an arrangement with each number in each grid so that any three numbers in a straight line - whether horizontally, vertically or diagonally add up to 15, which as Lillian explained is the number of days it takes the moon to reach fullness. It doesn't matter which way you add the numbers they add to 15. The Lo Shu square is the magic square of three. It is also the square of the planet Saturn, so 3X3 =9! Feng Shui definitely has a correlation to astrology, which I see as the basis of all systems, and this can be proven mathematically.

Note that when you add up all the number 1 to 9 i.e. 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 they add up to 45 degrees, representing each major direction on the compass, and here we see that once again 4+5 also adds up to 9.

The 9 hidden in the COMPASS and the Feng Shui formulas

The number 9 transcends the feng shui compass, and all the formulas of feng shui thus have the 9 hidden in each of the direction houses. Take the Eight Mansions formula for instance. According to this formula, there are eight directions major direction categories and these are 45 degrees each. Eight times forty-five equals three hundred and sixty degrees which is one circle or a complete cycle.

Note that all the important 45 degree angles add up to nine. One eighth = 45 degrees, (4+5=9), one quarter = 90 degrees (9+0=9), three eights = 135 degrees (1+3+5=9), one half = 180 degrees (1+8+0=9), five eights = 225 degrees (2+2+5=9), three quarters = 270 degrees (2+7+0=9), seven eights = 315 degrees (3+1+5=9) and the last comes back to 360 degrees ( 3+6+0 =9). So all the important angles add up to 9! This suggests that 9 is the most important number in feng shui formulas that use the compass.

Connection to STOCK MARKET

The Chinese agricultural (HSIA or solar) calendar starts on the 4th February each year; the 4th February on the astrological calendar is 315 degrees and this too adds up to the number nine. The astrological year starts on the 21st March each year and if you add 45 degrees to the starting point of zero degrees. Aries you end up with the following eight dates which are important turning points in the stock markets, commodities and currencies.

NOTE THESE DATES - they are turning points for the financial markets. We have underlined the dates that are coming soon.

The 6th May (45 degrees), 22nd June (90 degrees), 8th August (135 degrees), 22nd September (180 degrees), 7th November (225 degrees), 22nd December (270 degrees), 4th February (315 degrees) and back to beginning again completing the circle or cycle.

FLIGHT OF THE STAR NUMBERS IN THE LO SHU SQUARE... i.e moving alternately down and up

The way the numbers fly in the Lo Shu square (i.e. the flight pattern) also transcends the number 9. Thus note
that the number 5 moving down 135 degrees to 6 in the NW, then up 180 degrees to 7 in the West pattern, then down 45 degrees across to 8 the Northeast and so forth - the angle of flight of the numbers going from one to nine move in angles of 135, 135, 45,180, 45, 135 and 135, and every angle of degrees add up to 9.

Even when these total angles in degrees are added together, they make a sum of 810, which again add up to 9. Not just that, but drop the zero from 810 and you have 81, which is the square of nine. This stands for the moon, and the moon of course is always related to the passage of time i,e. to the calendar! I am thus not surprised when I was told that the Lo Shu square holds many secrets, and that the square unlocks the change of energy over time.

There are other magic squares with one up to nine in the centre that relate to the other planets and numbers.
This is also reflected in the number of squares per side; so the "square" is sequentially enlarged. The reason Feng Shui uses the magic square of three or which belongs to the planet Saturn, is that Saturn stands for real-estate or home and feng shui is about improving the home, so that it is in harmony with the cycles of a home's life.

The square of the numbers 1 and 6 is for the Sun, while the magic square of 6, 2 and 7 are for the moon; these two numbers are added together to make the magic square of 9 for the moon. 3 is for Saturn which is also the Lo Shu square, 4 is the magic square of Jupiter, 5 is the magic square of Mars, 7 is the magic square of Venus and 8 is the magic square of Mercury. These "magic squares" are also used in advanced feng shui.

The 12 animals and the Five Elements in Feng Shui

The earth rotates 15 degrees every hour and 24 hours x 15 = 360 or 1 day. The 24 Mountains relate to the 15 degree movement of the earth. Every year Jupiter moves 15 degrees and the is where the twelve animals comes from in Chinese astrology and Feng Shui. The elements run Earth, Mental, Water, Wood and Fire. These elements are 72 degrees apart.

The 5 pointed star that is the symbol of the 5 elements is also the symbol of the Vitruvian Man. The pattern of the five pointed star starts at zero which has to start in the earth sign at 4th February and moves 144 degrees times five which equals a movement of 720 degrees to get back to zero.
